As of Monday, masks will be optional in hallways, cafeterias and elevators as well as other non-clinical areas such as meeting rooms and clinical areas where direct patient care is not provided, according to a statement from the hospital.

Masks will continue to be required for patients and visitors in the emergency department as well as during patient care, in patient rooms and on outbreak units.

Masking may also be required in outpatient areas "based on screening and symptoms." Patients feeling unwell should wear a mask at all times, the hospital statement says. Masks will be widely available through the hospital.

"The easing of masking requirements is a direct result of low COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses transmission, a low number of hospitalizations, and high vaccination rates and hybrid immunity," said the statement from hospital spokesperson Rebecca Abelson. "The change also reflects recent similar changes at other regional hospitals, and as with all of our masking policies, will be adjusted accordingly as circumstances change."
